“So, the eagerly anticipated Real Beavers’ eponymously titled debut has finally landed and trust me it does not disappoint. From the quite delicious stomper ‘devil mind’ to the pulsing relentless rhythm of exit track ‘she could love you’ this is gloriously straight up, uncompromising Rock n roll. The influences on the record are quite astonishing too, there are nods of the head to the Talking Heads and Roxy Music aswell as a wonderfully knowing reference to Otis Redding (‘what was it you said’), and the bonus track ‘Psycho world’ adds a certain Pretty Things flavour to proceedings. My favourite track though is ‘Lost’. There are no bad versions of ‘Lost’ from Bill Rivers’ stripped back emotionally raw original to Ela Orleans’ spooky atmospheric version, it is a great song and here it is re-imagined as an ‘exile/let it bleed’ period stones-esque rock ballad with long drooling guitar overlays. The musicianship on the record as a whole is excellent- technical playing with subtle tricks littered everywhere but manages to do so without losing any of the raw, rock n’ roll passion and energy. Above all though this is a record steeped in authenticity, a fearlessness to hide their influences in plain sight, draw on them and make them their own. A fearlessness to, in the words of John Lennon, ‘say what you wanna say and put it to a backbeat.”
